I look around my daughters room and find an array of books from many genres. From Fantasy to Mystery, Suspense and Love. Because we sell books, there are many books to choose from in our house if you just need a good read. But I often wonder, of the substance of the books my kids are reading over how many books they have read. Don't get me wrong, I rather kids pick up a book than watch a TV Show any day. But if they have gone from Dr. Seuss, to J.K. Rowling, and E.B. White, I also want a Wilson Rawls "Where the Red Fern Grows" and also maybe even "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson.
Diverse Books:
Its important to open up your child's mind to all books and genres. This will not only encourage reading for as a past time, but a necessity. There are several fun books that trick the kids into learning. Kids in sports, can read a lot of books about other children in sport that are for fun and learning. Cultural books and historical books are great also, and have fun twists on education.
Reading Games:
We played games that involved having to read a chapter in a book, then being the first to tell you what that chapter was about. Or we would have "read-off" who can read the fastest or summarize what they read in a funny way, rapping or singing.
Reading can be fun and helps train the brain!
Heck! I had to retrain myself to just sit down and read a book, because I went through a brief state of googling a quick passage from a book to gain some insight on something or mindlessly on the computer for no reason at all, then I would turn it of and go to bed.
We adults have to read more also, but I will tell ya. Take a look around your childs room or in your bookshelf and if you don't see an array of diverse books, get some additions in there and add to your repertoire, Tell them they will be the "Coolest" kid on the block.!!!...Well just tell them to read different books, that might work too.
